Scribble/Scrap

Hi, I'm Tyler. I write things and make things. This is where the stuff that falls out of my brain lives. Also: dog photos. My book, Comics for Film, Games, and Animation: Using Comics to Construct Your Transmedia Storyworld is coming out next summer from Focal Press.

I’ve got scans of a pretty good number of the pages to X-MEN #1—the original artwork to that book exists in its entirety. So here’s Page 4. The faint notes on the bottom, written by Stan Lee, say:
HOLD IT! THAT’S IT! LEARN TO HOVER!
VIBRATES LIKE HUMMING BIRD
GOOD! YOU’RE LEARNING TO MASTER IT!
While in later months and years, Jack Kirby and the other Marvel artists would write border notes describing the action on the pages for Stan to dialogue from, these were jotted down by Stan himself. Pencils by Jack Kirby, inks by Paul Reinman.

I was working for this jack-of-all-trades kind of client. We did everything from newspaper ads to massive events media planning and logistic. One day, he stumbled upon my animation reel.

Client: “You know, I saw your animations last night. They are pretty good.”

Me: “Thank you sir.”

Quick Thought on Grant Morrison’s SUPERGODS

While I enjoyed the read, there was one glaring problem, no doubt to my own expectations of the book. I was hoping for a 21st century version of Campbell’s Hero of a Thousand Faces, looking at our modern mythological beings, superheros. While some of the book showed that promise, the autobiographical sections killed that central conceit. Nonetheless, a worthwhile read, and one of the more interesting looks at comics.
